AARP Loses Members Over Health Care Stance

I've been away at the beach for the past few days, but now I've returned and am ready to jump back into the fray.

This article in USA Today caught my eye for a couple of reasons. First, it demonstrates how the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is more of a lobbying firm than it is a representative organization. Second, it highlights an aspect of the failures of the American public education system ever since the libs took control of it back in the 60's and 70's.

Let's look at the first point. From the Associated Press:

About 60,000 senior citizens have quit AARP since July 1 due to the group's support for a health care overhaul, a spokesman for the organization said Monday.

The membership loss suggests dissatisfaction on the part of AARP members at a time when many senior citizens are concerned about proposed cuts to Medicare providers to help pay for making health care available for all.

And it is not just the cuts in Medicare that are of concern. Seniors are also concerned about the "end of life" provisions in Section 1233 of HR3200 and about the "outcome-based measures" of Section 1162 of HR3200 which could be used as justifications for denying health care to seniors based on their "productivity" as citizens.

Although AARP has said they will not support a plan that reduces Medicare benefits, they have yet to come out and point to any specific language in any bill as a reason for refusing support. Further, they have refused to threaten witholding of support as a means to pressure any lawmakers.

So, let's look at my second point above. You may have noticed that at many of the Town Hall meetings across the United States that a great many of those voicing their opposition to socialized health care are, in fact, seniors. I was discussing this with a friend of mine and he noted that the older crowd seemed to know the legal mechanism better than the younger crowd.

This made sense to me. I began learning about the Constituion in the 4th grade and learned how bills were passed by Congress and signed into law by the President. These laws were then tested in the courts to make sure they didn't violate the Constitution. This was back in the early 70's.

Ever since the left has taken over the education system here in the U.S., such lessons are becoming more and more scarce. That is one of the reasons you see such an age disparity at the Town Halls and probably a good reason why Arlen Specter scolded his own constituents saying, "I am not required to be here!" only to have the crowd angrily boo at him. Apparently, Specter was expecting his crowd to be of the younger set who was not as well-educated about the Constitution. He was wrong.

I hope this debate continues for several more months. It is the best thing to happen to America since the end of World War II.

More Items Found In HR3200, The Socialized Medicine Bill

Among the following items, you will find some repeats of what was noted before. But this list is even more comprehensive. It was compiled by Liberty Counsel, a Civil Liberties Law Firm.

If it seems like too long a list to read, believe me, reading the entire text of HR3200 would take longer.

You can access this listing on-line here:

Democrats' Break Looking Like A Bad Trip

I can think of so many venues when Conservative speakers went onto liberal college campuses and then were shouted down by radical students. No one in the media or the Democrat party even batted a single eye-lash when that happened.

But, now that it is happening to various members of Congress, mostly Democrats, they are calling the action "shameful" or labeling thier constituents as a "mob, sent by the local Republican and Libertarian parties” that “came not just to be heard but to deny others the right to be heard."

Just yet another case of Dem hypocrisy, eh?

Alex Isenstadt and Abby Phillip of the Politico have this:

Angry protesters shouted down Democrats at public events from Texas to Pennsylvania over the weekend, leaving the party only one real hope for getting its message out over recess: a backlash.

In Austin, Texas, Rep. Lloyd Doggett was drowned out by a group of noisy, sign-waving demonstrators who shouted, “Just say no” as he tried to talk about health care reform.

...

In Morrisville, Pa., Rep. Patrick Murphy was forced to scrap plans for a one-on-one meet-the-congressman session when people in the crowd started shouting. Murphy switched to a town hall format mid-event and even then had to ask the audience at times to “be respectful.”

And at a health care event in Philadelphia, Sen. Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius were repeatedly interrupted by booing and heckling. “We can shout at one another, or we can leave the stage,” Sebelius said at one point. “It’s up to you.”

For months, the American people have been telling their Congressional representatives that we do not want socialized medicine. Congress refused to listen. Now, the people are taking their message directly to the various members of Congress.

But, never ones to learn from any mistakes, the Dems are pushing back in the worst way they possibly can: They are trying to label average Americans as being radical or fringe extremists:

"The last place Republicans ought to be moving their party is even more to the fringe of the political spectrum," said Eric Schultz, a spokesman for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

Added a senior Democratic strategist: "It may be out of necessity, but for Republicans, relying on the fringe elements of the party to be the face of opposition on health care is a dangerous game. The birthers and the tea party folks aren’t controllable, come off as angry and out of control and couldn’t care less about the issue at hand."

Alienating mainstream voters is not the way to get them to vote for you in 2010, especially when you consider the fact that a good portion of the people protesting this socialized medicine bill are Democrats. This is not an issue about party affiliation, it is about saving America's health care system from the fate suffered by Great Britain and Canada's health care systems.

The people who participated in those Tax Day Tea Parties are regular folks who want an out-of-control government to bring itself back under control. That is not a fringe idea. It is a common sense idea and the Dems and other members of Congress ignore it at their own peril.

Even Arlen Specter is starting to see the light:

Specter, who was booed in Philadelphia over the weekend, told The Associated Press that it’s “highly likely” other senators will soon meet the same fate.

With Specter Defection, Dems Will Only Have Themselves To Blame For Any Negative Impacts Of Their Socialist Agenda

Arlen Specter left the GOP for the socialist Dems yesterday. I say, "Don't let the door hit you on the way out." Specter has kicked the GOP in the teeth too many times for this to be anything other than a good happening.

But, let's look at a few things Specter needs to iron out. Donors gave him $5.8 million to represent them as a Republican. If Specter really did leave on "principles," then he should be principled enough to make sure that every last cent of those donations is returned to those whom he stabbed in the back.

We also need to look at why he did what he did. Far from being an attack of principles, it was a move of political self-preservation.

RNC Chairman Michael Steele had this to say:

"Let's be honest-Senator Specter didn't leave the GOP based on principles of any kind. He left to further his personal political interests because he knew that he was going to lose a Republican primary due to his left-wing voting record.

"Republicans look forward to beating Sen. Specter in 2010, assuming the Democrats don't do it first."

Specter is so far behind his GOP opponent in Pennsylvania that there was almost no way he was going to win the GOP primary. That was the motivation for the switch. He felt he could win the Dem primary rather than go through the fight of the GOP primary. His defection had nothing to do with principle. He sacrificed principle in the interest of self-promotion.

Specter is going to have a lot of explaining to do if he reverses position on things like card-check which he claims he opposes. If he suddenly comes out in favor of it, there should be a complete investigation into exactly what he was promised by Obama, Biden and others in the Dem leadership for his act of betrayal.

But the main thing this means now is that the Dems will no longer have anyone else to blame when their policies drive our economy to ruin and America's security becomes non-existant. The only question that remians now is whether or not the Dems will have the integrity to admit when their policies fail that they were wrong.

National Republican Trust Political Action Committee Vows To Oppose Three RINOs

Specifically, Arlen Specter (R-PA), Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Susan Collins (R-ME). Those three have been a traitor to Conservative principles for far too long. It is time to get rid of them.

So, Scott Wheeler of Republican Trust PAC has gone on record and put those three on notice that the GOP Trust PAC will provide support to whomever challenges these three in the Primary Elections when they come up for re-election in their home states.

From the GOP Trust Press Release:

Today, Scott Wheeler, Executive Director, National Republican Trust PAC, announced that his organization would support challengers in primaries of any Republicans who vote for the stimulus bill. The NRT PAC spent the third largest amount of any independent organization in the 2008 campaign; $6 million in advertising through the November election, and $750,000 in the runoff for the U.S. Senate seat in Georgia.

“The American people don't want this trillion dollar political payoff that will just line the pockets of non-governmental organizations who supported Obama in the election,” Wheeler said. “Republican Senators are on notice. If they support the stimulus package we will make sure every voter in their state knows how they tried to further bankrupt voters in an already bad economy.”

Specter, Snowe and Collins have rightly earned the ire of the GOP base. With the help of those three, the Dems have effectively mortgaged our childrens' future on a spending package that is more about repaying political allies than it is for getting the economy going.

I wonder what those three were promised in return for their back-stabbing?
